June is a good month, not too hot yet, colorful flowers, and fireflies. Last week my guests told me they avoided coming to Japan in June due to the rainy season. Yes, Japanese rainy seasons starts in early June and last about 6 weeks in Tokyo area. Today Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) announced officially the rainy season has started today in Tokyo area and forecast to last until July 21.
Is it that bad? It rains but it always rains in Japan. I have checked the last year data in Yahoo weather, the umbrella mark in last July was only one while one in last May and two in last July. Not bad at all. Plus flowers are beautiful in June, not only hydrangea in Kamakura, Iris in Meiji Shrine is beautiful.
What I like most in this season is firefly. In some hotels outside Tokyo, you can stay in the room with a garden with firefly. Even in Tokyo some hotels with nice gardens have firefly dinner plans. It lasts only in the rainy season.
If you are foodie, many fruits are in their best seasons in June; Japanese cherry, peach, melon, figs, etc.
Do not wait until the rainy season is over! Visit us in June. The hotel rooms are comparatively reasonable and less tourists. So peaceful!
